Questions & answers

Renovation questions, answered straight.

Renovation questions, in the order people actually ask them — from 'are you the right size of firm for this?' through pricing and living-through-it, to the practical detail.

Stage

Before you decide

What kind of work do you take on?

Full and part house renovations and extensions, and the ten trades that make them up: structural and steel work, plastering and rendering, carpentry and joinery, electrical and lighting, plumbing, tiling, flooring, interior design and decoration, and garden landscaping. The defining line is that we cover everything from the foundations to the plastering — so the natural job for us is one where a house needs more than one trade.

Are you a builder or a main contractor who subs everything out?

The joiners, plumbers, electricians and craftsmen are the company's own. That is the reason ten services can sit on one list and still be sequenced as a single programme — nobody is waiting three weeks on an outside firm's diary between first fix and plaster.

How long have you been going?

Cheshire Renovations Limited was incorporated on 3 October 2013 and is an active company, number 08716476, with Ryan Retter as sole director. You can check that yourself on the Companies House register. We don't make any claim about trading years beyond that date.

Do you take on small jobs?

The work is built around renovations and extensions rather than one-off repairs. If you're not sure whether what you've got is too small, the fastest thing is to ring and describe it — you'll get a straight answer rather than a quote for something you don't need.

Quoting and money

How does pricing work?

By written, itemised quotation after we've seen the property. Renovations are too variable for a price list — the same kitchen in two different houses can differ by the cost of everything found behind the plaster. What we can promise is that the quotation is broken down, so you can see where the money goes and decide what stays in.

What happens if something unexpected comes up mid-job?

On an older Chester property, something usually does. Any extra work that changes the agreed scope is quoted in writing and agreed before it is carried out. You should never see an item on a final invoice that you haven't already seen a price for.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. Come and look, talk it through, and you get a written quotation. If what you want and what you can spend don't meet, we'd rather say so at that stage than six weeks into a build.

Can a renovation be done in phases?

Often, yes — and it's worth asking about at quote stage rather than later, because the phasing changes the sequence. Some things are much cheaper done together (anything involving floors, walls or services) and some genuinely can wait.

Stage

While the work is on

What hours will you be on site?

Site working hours are 8:00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday and 8:00am to 1:00pm on Saturday. The office runs Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm — so if you ring at half eight in the morning you'll get the site, and at four in the afternoon you'll get the office.

Can we stay in the house during the work?

It depends entirely on the job. Plenty of part renovations are lived through; full renovations with the services off usually aren't. It's one of the first things to talk through, because it changes the sequence — the review on our Google profile mentions the temporary kitchen set up during a ground-floor renovation, which is exactly the sort of arrangement that makes staying put workable.

Who do I speak to about the job?

One number. Because the trades are in-house, there is one point of contact who knows what happened on site yesterday and what is happening tomorrow, rather than five subcontractors each holding a different piece of the story.

How much mess is there going to be?

A renovation is dusty and there is no version of it that isn't. What can be controlled is containment, protection of the parts of the house that aren't in the works, and clearing down at the end of each stage rather than at the end of the job.

Practicalities

Where are you based and how far do you travel?

40B Parkgate Road, Chester CH1 4AJ — a few minutes from the city centre. The working patch is Chester and Cheshire; our own project write-ups name jobs in Hoole, Upton-by-Chester and Mollington. If you're near enough that a team can be at your door for eight, it's worth a call.

Do you deal with planning and building control?

Structural work is built to an engineer's calculations, and extensions go through the normal planning or permitted-development and building-control route. We'll talk you through which applies to your job at the first visit — there's a longer explanation on our extension planning guide.

How do I get in touch?

Ring 01244 747666 or email web.enquiries@cheshirerenovations.co.uk. There's a form on the contact page if you prefer, but for a renovation a phone call is honestly faster — the first five questions are always the same and they're quicker asked than typed.

Can I see more of your work?

Instagram is where the real photography lives — @cheshirerenovations, with hundreds of project posts. The gallery on this site shows the kinds of job on the service list; Instagram shows the actual ones.

Still have a question?
