Fresh plaster is thirsty. Put full-strength emulsion straight onto it and it dries too fast, sits on the surface and peels off in sheets a year later. It needs a thinned mist coat first, and it needs to be genuinely dry before that happens — which on a big skim in a cold month can be a fortnight, not a weekend.
That is a scheduling problem as much as a technical one, and it is the sort of thing that gets fudged when the plasterer and the decorator are different firms both trying to get off site. When they are the same company, the programme just allows for it.
The rest is the boring, decisive part: filling, caulking every internal angle, sanding between coats, masking properly and cutting in by hand.
