Structural & Steel Work

Walls out, steels in, everything above still exactly where it should be

Nearly every renovation worth doing has a wall in the wrong place. Taking it out means understanding what it carries, propping the load while the opening is formed, and installing a beam that's sized for the job rather than sized by eye.

We carry out structural and steel work as part of the renovations we run, which is the point: the beam goes in on the day the programme needs it, the openings are formed to the dimensions the joinery and plaster are already planned around, and the making-good afterwards is done by the same team.

Structural & Steel Work

Before anything comes out

The load path gets worked out first — what the wall carries, where it lands, and what the beam has to do. Structural calculations come from an engineer; we build to them. Nothing gets cut until the props and needles are in and taking the weight.

Openings and steel

Knock-throughs between kitchen and dining room, full-width rear openings for bi-folds, chimney breasts removed with gallows brackets or beams, and steels for extension junctions. Bearings, padstones and packing done properly, because a beam is only as good as what it's sitting on.

Making good afterwards

A steel is only finished when it's encased, fire-protected where it needs to be, boarded, plastered and invisible. Because our own plasterers follow our own structural work, there's no gap between the beam going in and the room looking finished.
