Tiling
Set out from the eye line in, not from the corner out
A tiled room either looks considered or it looks like it was started in a corner and hoped for the best. The difference is a setting-out drawing: where the datum line sits, how the cuts are balanced either side of a wall, and whether the grout lines on the floor line through with the grout lines on the wall.
We tile as part of the renovations we run, which means the substrate is ours too. Floors are checked for deflection, wet areas are tanked, and boards are the right ones for the job — because the most common cause of cracked tiles isn't the tiling, it's what's underneath it.
Setting out first
Datum lines established, cuts balanced, and the layout agreed with you before fixing starts. Large-format tiles in particular are unforgiving — one degree out at the bottom of a wall is a visible wedge at the top.
Substrates and tanking
Tile backer board where it's needed, wet areas tanked before anything is fixed, and floors checked and stiffened where deflection would crack the bed. Movement joints where the tile documentation says there should be movement joints.
Materials and grouting
Porcelain, ceramic, metro, mosaic and natural stone, each with the adhesive and grout it actually wants. Silicone lines run clean at internal corners and changes of plane, where grout would crack.
